Bicycle Saddle Test 2026 – The Best Models Compared

2 min read

A bad saddle ruins every ride. Whether you commute 5 kilometers to work or ride 100 kilometers over Alpine passes – if the saddle pinches, numbs, or chafes, you’ll eventually stop riding. And that’s exactly the problem: most bicycles come with saddles that don’t really fit anyone.

We tested the three Alpensattel models of the current 3.0 generation over several months in everyday use, on tours, and in sporty conditions. We also analyzed 1,639+ verified Trustpilot reviews to include real long-term experiences.

What we focused on in the test

A bicycle saddle test that only asks if it’s comfortable or not is useless. Comfort is subjective and depends on your anatomy, riding position, duration, and bike type. That’s why we worked with specific criteria:

Pressure distribution and sit bone support: A good saddle distributes pressure evenly on the sit bones instead of concentrating it on soft tissue and the perineal area. We checked whether the seating surface actually supports the sit bones and if a cutout relieves the sensitive middle area.

Comfort after 30, 60, and 120 minutes: Every saddle feels different in the first ten minutes compared to after two hours. We deliberately conducted long-term tests because typical problems only appear after 30 to 60 minutes.

Material and workmanship: Memory foam adapts differently than standard PU foam. We evaluated material quality, checked workmanship, and observed how the saddles behaved after several weeks.

Riding position as a filter factor: A saddle that’s perfect for upright sitting can be a disaster on a racing bike. That’s why we tested each saddle in the riding position it was designed for:

  • Upright (60 to 90 degrees): City bike, e-bike, Dutch bike – wide saddle, lots of padding
  • Moderate (45 to 60 degrees): Trekking, MTB, gravel – medium width, targeted padding
  • Sporty (under 45 degrees): Road bike, time trial – narrow saddle, minimal padding

Bicycle Saddle Test – Overview of Results

Model Type Riding Position Weight Rating
Alpensattel 3.0 Comfort+ City / Touring Upright approx. 350 g 5/5
Alpensattel 3.0 Sport+ Trekking / MTB Moderate approx. 290 g 5/5
Alpensattel 3.0 Race+ Road / Gravel Sporty approx. 250 g 4/5

All three models are available for women and men in different widths. Measuring sit bone width is worth doing before purchase – it takes two minutes and prevents mistakes.

Alpensattel Comfort+ in Review – for City, E-Bike and Touring

Who is it for? The Alpensattel 3.0 Comfort+ is designed for anyone who sits upright: city bikes, e-bikes, Dutch bikes, touring bikes and commuter bikes.

What convinced us: The wide contact area distributes pressure noticeably better than most original saddles. In the test, this was particularly noticeable after 60 minutes: no numbness, no pressure in the perineal area. The memory foam adapts to your individual sit bone shape after the first few minutes and maintains this fit throughout the ride without sagging. In the long-term test over several weeks, the cushion remained shape-stable.

What didn't convince us as much: The width, which is an advantage on city bikes, becomes a disadvantage on more sporty bikes. On road bikes or gravel bikes, it is simply unsuitable – too wide, too much material, wrong pressure distribution. At around 350 grams, it is not a lightweight.

Comfort+ Review: 5 out of 5 stars in the City and Touring category. The best combination of pressure relief, long-term comfort and material quality for upright riding positions.

Alpensattel Sport+ in Review – the Allrounder

Who is it for? The Alpensattel 3.0 Sport+ is designed for a moderately sporty riding position: trekking bikes, mountain bikes, hybrid bikes and sporty e-bikes.

What convinced us: The versatility. We took the Sport+ on the MTB through forest trails, rode 80-kilometer tours on the trekking bike and used the hybrid bike for commuting. It worked in all three scenarios. The AIR suspension absorbs shocks on uneven surfaces noticeably better than a purely foam-based cushion. In terms of width, the Sport+ sits between the Comfort+ and Race+ – narrow enough not to interfere with pedaling, yet wide enough to reliably support the sit bones.

What didn't convince us as much: If you are exclusively commuting in the city and sitting upright, the Comfort+ offers more cushioning comfort. On a road bike, the Sport+ reaches its limits. It just about works for gravel with a moderate posture, but not for true road biking.

Sport+ Review: 5 out of 5 stars as an all-round saddle. If you only need one saddle that works on different bikes, the Sport+ is the safest choice. At 290 grams, it is a strong value for this category.

Alpensattel Race+ in review – for road bikes and gravel

Who is it for? The Alpensattel 3.0 Race+ is designed for a forward-leaning, sporty riding position: road bikes, gravel bikes, and time trial bikes.

What convinced us: The narrow, flat design does not interfere with high-cadence pedaling. At around 250 grams, it is light enough for weight-conscious builds. The padding is minimal but strategically placed where pressure occurs in a forward-leaning posture. The relief channel works even better in a road bike position than on a city bike, as the forward lean directs more pressure precisely onto this area.

What did not convince us: The Race+ is not for casual riders. If you usually ride upright and mount the Race+ on a city bike, you will feel uncomfortable after 20 minutes. The adaptation period is longer than with the other two models – the first three to five rides feel harder than expected.

Race+ verdict: 4 out of 5 stars. Very good road bike saddle with a clear target audience. Excellent for its intended purpose, but not universally applicable.

Which bicycle saddle is the test winner 2026?

There is no single test winner. There is only the right saddle for your riding position and purpose:

  • City bike, e-bike, or touring bike: Comfort+. Best pressure distribution for an upright riding position, memory foam for long-term comfort.
  • Trekking bike, MTB, or hybrid: Sport+. AIR suspension for uneven terrain, versatile, a good compromise between comfort and sportiness.
  • Road bike or gravel: Race+. Lightweight, narrow, optimized for a forward-leaning posture.
  • Unsure? The Sport+ is the safest choice. It works well to very well for most riders and bike types.

Tip: Before ordering, measure your sit bone width. All three models are available in various widths. The best saddle in the world is no good if it is 2 centimeters too narrow or too wide.

Häufige Fragen

Which bicycle saddle is best for long tours?

For tours over 50 kilometers, pressure distribution, relief in the perineal area, and a shape-stable pad are important. In an upright seating position, the Alpensattel Komfort+ performs best – memory foam, a wide contact area, and a cutout provide comfort even after two hours. For a moderately sporty seating position (trekking bike), the Sport+ with AIR suspension is the better choice because it absorbs vibrations better.

Is an expensive bicycle saddle worth it?

Yes – if you ride regularly. A saddle for 15 euros from a discount store uses standard foam that compresses after just a few weeks. A saddle in the mid-price range (40 to 80 euros) uses better materials, lasts longer, and is ergonomically designed. If you ride three times a week, a good saddle pays off in just a few weeks through more riding comfort and fewer complaints.

How do I test if a saddle fits me?

Step one: Measure the sit bone distance using corrugated cardboard on a hard surface. This determines the correct saddle width. Step two: Mount the saddle horizontally and take a test ride of at least 30 minutes. Pressure points only appear after half an hour. Step three: Fine-tune the saddle tilt and height – sometimes the problem isn’t the saddle itself, but its position.

How long does it take to get used to a new bicycle saddle?

Expect three to five rides. Your body needs to get used to the new pressure distribution, and the padding needs to break in slightly. If a saddle is still uncomfortable after five rides (each lasting 30+ minutes), the width probably doesn't fit or the tilt is off. Then measure your sit bone width again.

Is there a Stiftung Warentest bicycle saddle test?

As of 2026, there is no current, comprehensive bicycle saddle test from Stiftung Warentest. Some saddles have been evaluated as part of overall bicycle tests, but without a dedicated saddle test category. More meaningful are practical tests over several weeks combined with long-term user feedback – our analysis is based on 1,639+ verified Trustpilot reviews.
